In our Universe, it is estimated that there over a 100 billion galaxies each with 100's of billions of stars. Do the math….an incomprehensible number of stars!!!

Polar North

The magical world of the Bisti Badlands comes to life during this night shot. Polaris (i.e., the North Star) is situated above the hoodoo.

Before the Sun

Before the Sun

This shot was made well-before the first light of the day. The long exposure integrated the dim light coming from the East to provide the beautifully soft illumination of the massive Shiprock.

The Star Factory

The Star Factory

By painting with light (i.e., the foreground trees) and positioning the Milky Way behind them, I get this unique scene. It appears that the trees are spewing stars like a steam stack at a factory would spew steam.

Rhythm of the Night

Rhythm of the Night

Moonlight, a clear star-filled sky, and a flashlight-painted foreground all combine to make this photograph have a special luminosity. This photograph was made while leading a photo tour in Arches National Park.

Heart of the Desert

Heart of the Desert

I enjoy the challenge and rewards to approaching an often-photographed subject, such as Balanced Rock, in a dramatically different way. This photograph was made well-after sundown using the moon (seen here as a star burst) and painting with a flashlight to tailor the luminosity of the subjects to my taste. The shutter was open for approximately 6 minutes.
