Intimate Patterns, Textures, and Abstracts in Nature

Autumn's Glory
Groves of Aspens are the largest living organisms on the planet due to their interconnected and vast root network. The sounds of shimmering aspen leaves is one of those “must experience” moments I wish all people could have.

Autumn's Glory

Aquabolt
This is a prime example of careful observation. While leading a workshop in Glacier I found this very graphic puddle of water that at the right angle was reflecting the intensely blue sky.

Aquabolt

Neskowin Reflection
Red Alder (Alnus rubra) trees and foliage reflected off the surface of a small pond in late afternoon light. The water, which is reflecting the golden hue of the setting sun, is being rippled by the wind. This location is near Neskowin Beach on the Central Oregon Coast.

Neskowin Reflection

Little Crater Lake
Viewing it upside-down as shown here emphasizes the beautiful reflection of this seldom-visited lake. Notice the underwater features!

Simply Cobbles
A simple group of cobblestones with specular highlights of the sun give great texture and depth to this image.

Simply Cobbles

Merced Ice
The golden hues of nearby canyon walls and a clear blue sky give this ice abstract the pleasing color palette.

Merced Ice

Tumbled
Cobblestones that can be found along the Oregon coast is one of my favorite subjects. This photograph was made using long exposure and a sturdy tripod.

Tumbled

Two Medicine Stones
I really like the color palette and the geometric pattern of the stones that where found at Paradise Point on Two Medicine Lake.

Two Medicine Stones

Fe Reflection
The mineral rich soils of the San Juans often provide striking colors as is the case found at this location. The red oxidized iron (Fe) soil is reflected in this pond.

Wheat Curve
A wheat field in the Palouse countryside of Eastern Washington state.

The Dance of Ice
Several unusually cold days allowed for unique ice formations along the Merced River in Yosemite Valley.

The Dance of Ice

Ice and Fire
Light from the early evening reflected off of El Capitan makes for a dramatic detail shot of rocks in the Merced River.

Aqua Texture

Ancient Clay
The diversity of Oregon’s landscapes is second to none. The ancient clay beds of the John Day Fossil Beds area provide a surreal tapestry of hues, textures and patterns that are begging to be photographed.

Ancient Clay

Sister Brother
The juxtaposition of moss covered rocks and an old weathered timber found with Drift Creek provides a subtle detail of beauty in this temperate rain forest found on the central Oregon coast range.

Sister Brother

Skin Deep
Found lying next to the trail to Drift Creek Falls, this Red Alder trunk’s outer bark was peeled away (by a previous hiker) to reveal a colorful palette.

Essence of Nature
As a photographer I am always looking for old numbered subjects, such as this grouping of Teasels. By gently applying a swallow depth of field I isolated the grouping from an otherwise distracting background.

Essence of Nature

Sand Cone
Keeping it simple usually works well in photography.

Chromatic Springs
This is one of hundreds of geothermal features in this uniquely photogenic National Park.

Chromatic Springs

Overflow
I was drawn to this subtle detail in the beautiful Cimarron Canyon of North central New Mexico.

Daisssssies
Careful framing and active zooming creates these dynamic images of a grouping of Oxeye daisies (Leucanthemum vulgare).

Daisssssies

True Colors
This landscape abstract is a bit visually shocking due to the intense competing hues.

Basalt and Mussels
The contrasting textures drew my attention before making this photograph.

Life Force
This photograph was crafted at midday on a sunny day. I took care in finding subjects that were in shadow, as this allowed me to control the contrast and make a pleasing exposure.

Life Force

Suspension
I love finding subjects that clearing stand on their own merits such as this leaf floating on the muddy, winter waters of Courthouse Wash in Arches National Park.

241 Seconds
This image was crafted will leading a photo tour on Bandon Beach. Using a well-planted tripod and 241 seconds of exposure a surreal effect is achieved in the sky and water.

Oregon Iris
The simple beauty of the Oregon Iris (Iris tenax) is apparent from this capture.

Natural Flow
I am always on the hunt for beautiful details that nature provides. This was one such subject that I HAD to work with.

Cone
A pinecone and a cold winter’s evening come together to make this simple yet eloquent scene.

Sandstone Failure
This is one of countless details to be found of the rugged Oregon coastline.

On the Rocks
This beautiful bloom was found growing within the cracks of an offshore sea stack..

The Line Up
This image was crafted during an intense snowstorm in Yosemite Valley. If you look closely you will notice an unusual snow “waterfall” on the left half of the rock face.

The Line Up

Lunar Canyon
While focusing my attention on the scene in front of me, the Colorado River, I looked behind me to find this dramatic arrangement of the moon setting over the canyon wall. I quickly turned my camera on this fleeting situation.

Lunar Canyon

Forest Flow
The combination of the hue and abstractness of this scene compelled me to make this image.

Forest Flow

Ten Thousand Waters
This is a hard-won photograph for me. First, I over the years I scoured the coastline for a location that offered this effect. Second, my camera and I took a major Pacific drenching while trying to get this shot.

Ten Thousand Waters

Echoes from the Past
One of many petroglyths found within Arches and the surrounding area.

Reeds
Being flexible while shooting is critical for successful photography. A case in point, awaking early for a morning shoot to get a reflection of Mt. Hood in Trillium Lake led to this intimate image. The cloudy conditions eliminated the view of Hood on this particular morning, hence I found other subjects to aim my camera at.

Reeds

76
This is one of several macro shots that I made while leading a tour in Glacier. The softness and perfection of this flower made the ideal shot.

Mediation
A cold, wet day hiking in the Opal Creek Wilderness rewarded me with this simple and colorful scene..

Blooooooming
Using active zooming, I carefully crafted this photograph to get the desired effect. This effect is entirely created within the camera with no required "digital manipulation".

Blooooooming

Winter's Force
The persistent battle between sandstone and ice/water was central to the formation of the amazing landscape found within Arches National Park.

Winter's Force

The Boulder Field
I was immediately attracted to the intensely abstract nature of this scene. Do you know which way is up?

The Boulder Field

La Plata's Grove
This photograph was made on the Mancos-side of the La Plata Mountains. I cannot spend enough time in groves of Aspens.

La Plata's Grove

Sidelit
The Animas River Canyon above Rockwood makes for spectacular scenery. This photograph was made adjacent to the Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Train track.

Narrow Gauge Cones
These pinecones found lying next to the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Train track along the Highline region provides a telling detail of this historic train.
