Intimate Patterns, Textures, and Abstracts in Nature

Simply Cobbles
A simple group of cobblestones with specular highlights of the sun give great texture and depth to this image.

Simply Cobbles

Two Medicine Stones
I really like the color palette and the geometric pattern of the stones that where found at Paradise Point on Two Medicine Lake.

Natural Flow
I am always on the hunt for beautiful details that nature provides. This was one such subject that I HAD to work with.

Natural Flow

Neskowin Reflection
Red Alder (Alnus rubra) trees and foliage reflected off the surface of a small pond in late afternoon light. The water, which is reflecting the golden hue of the setting sun, is being rippled by the wind. This location is near Neskowin Beach on the Central Oregon Coast.

Reeds
Being flexible while shooting is critical for successful photography. A case in point, awaking early for a morning shoot to get a reflection of Mt. Hood in Trillium Lake led to this intimate image. The cloudy conditions eliminated the view of Hood on this particular morning, hence I found other subjects to aim my camera at.

Life Force
This photograph was crafted at midday on a sunny day. I took care in finding subjects that were in shadow, as this allowed me to control the contrast and make a pleasing exposure.

76
This is one of several macro shots that I made while leading a tour in Glacier. The softness and perfection of this flower made the ideal shot.

Tumbled
Cobblestones that can be found along the Oregon coast is one of my favorite subjects. This photograph was made using long exposure and a sturdy tripod.

Sand Cone
Keeping it simple usually works well in photography.

Reflected Reality
I enjoy finding surreal reflections on different bodies of water to photograph. This is one of many that I have taken without any digital manipulation.

Reflected Reality

Over the Edge
I was captivated by the flow of water over this striking edge of rock in one of many streams found in Glacier National Park.

Over the Edge

Blooooooming
Using active zooming, I carefully crafted this photograph to get the desired effect. This effect is entirely created within the camera with no required "digital manipulation".

Blooooooming

Ten Thousand Waters
This is a hard-won photograph for me. First, I over the years I scoured the coastline for a location that offered this effect. Second, my camera and I took a major Pacific drenching while trying to get this shot.

Sandstone Failure
This is one of countless details to be found of the rugged Oregon coastline.

Aquabolt
This is a prime example of careful observation. While leading a workshop in Glacier I found this very graphic puddle of water that at the right angle was reflecting the intensely blue sky.

Chromatic Springs
This is one of hundreds of geothermal features in this uniquely photogenic National Park.

Echoes from the Past
One of many petroglyths found within Arches and the surrounding area.

A pinecone and a cold winter’s evening come together to make this simple yet eloquent scene.

Daisssssies
Careful framing and active zooming creates these dynamic images of a grouping of Oxeye daisies (Leucanthemum vulgare).

Pebbles and Ice
Ice melting from a rocky shoreline of the Merced River in Yosemite Valley.

Trapped
This root, from a fire devastated tree, grew tightly in the crevasse of a large boulder.

Glacial Texture
The texture and hues invited me to make this macro photograph of the surface of a rock.

Wheat Curve
A wheat field in the Palouse countryside of Eastern Washington state.

The Dance of Ice
Several unusually cold days allowed for unique ice formations along the Merced River in Yosemite Valley.

Ice and Fire
Light from the early evening reflected off of El Capitan makes for a dramatic detail shot of rocks in the Merced River.

Life Goes On
Life goes on after a fire destroyed an ancient Redwood tree. The tree was several hundred years old!

River Grass
Winter’s effect on river grass is evident in this natural abstract made South of Seal Rocks.

The Cycle of Renewal
This photograph was made on a rock in the middle of Battle Axe Creek in the stunning setting of the Opal Creek Wilderness.

The Cycle of Renewal

Opal Creek
Nature’s palette is highlighted in this abstract made from the middle of Opal Creek.

A State of Rest
A Hermit Crab (Pagurus sp.) came to rest on a large rock. This is one of those shots that I frequently get accused of “staging the scene”. However, if you are out in nature enough with a good eye, it is amazing the scenes that can unfold in front of you.

A State of Rest

Under the Falls
The relentless pounding of a waterfall is captured on one of Oregon’s many cobblestone beaches.

Sister Brother
The juxtaposition of moss covered rocks and an old weathered timber found with Drift Creek provides a subtle detail of beauty in this temperate rain forest found on the central Oregon coast range.

Sister Brother

Merced Ice
The golden hues of nearby canyon walls and a clear blue sky give this ice abstract the pleasing color palette.

Merced Ice

Skin Deep
Found lying next to the trail to Drift Creek Falls, this Red Alder trunk’s outer bark was peeled away (by a previous hiker) to reveal a colorful palette.

Overflow
I was drawn to this subtle detail in the beautiful Cimarron Canyon of North central New Mexico.

Essence of Nature
As a photographer I am always looking for old numbered subjects, such as this grouping of Teasels. By gently applying a swallow depth of field I isolated the grouping from an otherwise distracting background.

Mediation
A cold, wet day hiking in the Opal Creek Wilderness rewarded me with this simple and colorful scene..

Forest Flow
The combination of the hue and abstractness of this scene compelled me to make this image.

El Cap Reflection
The reveal of differing levels of detail of El Cap in the reflection of the ice and water is what inspired me to make this photograph.

El Cap Reflection

Aquaduct
Precarious placement of my camera in near dark conditions allowed me to capture the channeled runoff water from a small hydroelectric generator that powers the small community of Jawbone Flats.

Oregon Iris
The simple beauty of the Oregon Iris (Iris tenax) is apparent from this capture.

On the Rocks
This beautiful bloom was found growing within the cracks of an offshore sea stack..

A River Runs Around It
I am always on the hunt for subtle details in my surroundings. This is one of those cases where most people would shoot the entire river and miss the smaller details. For this particular shot I needed to setup my tripod in the middle of the river.

True Colors
This landscape abstract is a bit visually shocking due to the intense competing hues.

Four Stones
I have always been drawn to photograph the small details that most people past by. This is one such case.

Prints in the Sand
Every morning, before the winds of the day clean the slate, you can venture out on the dunes for wonderful evidence of wildlife.
