Canyons, Deserts, and High Plateaus

The Painted Landscape
From this high vantage point, the drama of this unique landscape is obvious. The hike to this location is well worth the effort and time.

Fisher Towers
The always stunning Fisher Towers are one of those locations that are difficult to leave.

Ancient Clay
The diversity of Oregon’s landscapes is second to none. The ancient clay beds of the John Day Fossil Beds area provide a surreal tapestry of hues, textures and patterns that are begging to be photographed.

Cloud Flames
White "flaming" clouds above the Three Gossips in Arches National Park.

Lunar Canyon
While focusing my attention on the scene in front of me, the Colorado River, I looked behind me to find this dramatic arrangement of the moon setting over the canyon wall. I quickly turned my camera on this fleeting situation.

Lunar Canyon

San Luis Valley
The setting sun is basking this magical valley with a warm glow.

Washer Woman Arch
The layering and warm hues of this sunrise scene give a strong sense of place to the arid Canyonlands.

Sandstone Majesty
After a nice afternoon hike to this iconic location, I made this photograph while waiting for the sun to set. I spent another 4 hours at this location doing creative nighttime photography with students.

Sandy Base
This is one of my favorite areas on the face of our planet. The combination of the giant sand dunes with the surrounding fourteen thousand foot peaks provide a beautiful setting that will not be forgotten.

Delicate Arch
The icon of this fantastic national park.

Unstable Relationship
It's not if this rock will fall it is when will it fall. It is difficult to appreciate the precariousness of this arrangement that is found within Arches National Park.

Ripples in Time
With 50 mph winds, this location provided many challenges for a photographer. Specifically, blowing sand and camera shake.

Canyon Thunder
This photograph was made on a stormy evening at the spectacular Grand View Overlook.

Painted Hills in Golden Light
Magical evening light illuminating the Painted Hills. This photograph was a first prize winner in the 2006 North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) Summit Contest.

The Eye of the Beholder
This is a shot of the often photographed North Window Arch.

The Arm of God
A different perspective of the often photographed Delicate Arch.

The Keeper of Time
Southern Idaho is a wondrous landscape of high deserts and remote canyons. This vantage point overlooks the Bruneau River.

The Keeper of Time

Storm Over the Dunes
This photograph was made just prior to an intense thunderstorm at one of my personal favorite locations on the face of this planet, the Great Sand Dunes located in Southern Colorado.

The Test of Time
The light and texture give this image great depth.

Painted Bloom
Sparse springtime bloom on the ancient clay beds of the Painted Hills.

Surrounded
The shear magnitude of this wide-angle shot can only be appreciated by visiting this location in person. I was literally on the extreme edge of a thousand foot drop off when this photograph was made.

The Crooked River
Smith Rock is a rock-climbing mecca in the Northwest. In addition to the great climbing opportunities the scenery is not bad either.

The Path to the Painted Hills
The Painted Hills is the epitome of an artist’s paradise.

Fiery Furnace and the La Sal Mountains
Late afternoon light on the sandstone fins, known as the Fiery Furnace, in Arches National Park with the snow capped La Sal mountains in the background.

Limber Pine
Sunset over the desolate lava fields at the Craters of the Moon National Monument. A solitary Limber Pine is in the foreground.

Steaming Mountains
The combination of the cloud pattern and the La Sal Mountains in the background help highlight the texture in the canyon walls.

The Arch on the Mesa
Sunrise at Mesa Arch should be on every photographer’s short list, especially if they enjoy the iconic locations of the West.

The Painted Base
Perched high above the valley floor, I made this photograph during a late afternoon while waiting for the moonrise that occurred later.

Echoes from the Past
One of many petroglyths found within Arches and the surrounding area.

Arid Oasis
The spring in the high deserts of central Oregon brings rain, which feed the plant life such as the grass that can be found in the foreground of an otherwise arid scene. The long exposure combined with the wind give the grass the appearance of motion.
